We all lack confidence and don’t feel good about ourselves sometimes. But when low self-esteem is there all the time it becomes a long-term problem. This harms our health. Mentally and Physically. Next to that, it is also very harmful to achieving your dreams and your relationships with others and your work. How do you raise your self-esteem and why is it important to do so?
What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves. When our self-esteem is low we see ourselves in a negative light. We punish ourselves, don’t think we are good enough or we think we will never be as good as someone else. This makes us less able to take on challenges that life throws at us. It also makes it impossible to go and live your dream life. Telling yourself you probably can’t make you do it.
What causes low self-esteem?
The most important thing to know is that having a low-esteem is not your fault. It all begins in childhood. Our parents, siblings, other family members, teachers, friends, media and your environment. It all depends on what you have been told over and over again. For example: if you always got the message that you are not good enough, then this will stick with you. The message becomes a belief-system and if it gets confirmed by others over and over again it gets stronger. Nowadays this person may experience that they have to live up to other’s expectations or that they are not good enough. Also, personality and circumstances are playing a big role in getting low self-esteem.
What are the effects of not changing low self-esteem?
The effects can be heartbreaking. At least from my perspective. Without confidence, you may hide from being you in this world. You may not feel confident to start your dream business or change your job into one you really like. You might stick to the relationship that is all right because you don’t think you can do better. You don’t raise your voice and let yourself be heard and therefore you will never be heard.
What I see is that people avoid things that will bring them so much in the long-term. This by not putting the effort into working on their confidence and self-esteem. Some people create unhelpful habits such as smoking, drinking, or using drugs to cope with it.
What do confidence and healthy self-esteem bring you?
First of all people with good self-esteem and confidence feel positive about themselves and about life. This makes them much more resilient, and cope better with life’s ups and downs. People with confidence go and take action because they trust themselves and the process. This means they get out there, learn and get things done. They are more likely to follow their dreams and achieve their dreams. You will have better relationships because you will attract more positive energy because you send good energy. People with high self-esteem are in good relationship with themselves. They are happy with who they are, they know what they want and therefore will achieve more in life.
